Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace: SC Issues Notice to States
It has been reported that the Supreme Court today has issued Notice to States in pursuance of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Supreme Court for proper implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. In the case, the Petitioner Initiatives for Inclusion Foundation alleged that the States were not implementing the impugned Act in its true spirit and that even the Local District Officers and Complaints Committees as provided for in the Act were not being appointed.
The Supreme Court Bench has sought response in the matter in four weeks and reports on constitution of committees and mechanism to monitor implementation of law.
The Act envisages the setting up of District officers, Nodal Agencies as well other mechanisms at the District Level in the form of Local Complaints Committee in each State in India with the intent to provide protection against sexual harassment of women at workplace and for prevention and redressal of complaints of sexual harassment at workplace. The main allegation of the Petitioner in the case was that even after 4 years of the enactment such Committees has not been set up in States/ UT’s.
